This is the one we would describe as the most interesting. The fuji superia 400 film used was soaked in urine, yes urine!, overnight then left to dry for a week before shooting. Bravo to Maureen for the idea but we don't think we'll be trying it somehow!

A Crappy Disposable Produced These

Actually uploading some of my own photos to here for a change :)

This set is from a crappy little disposable camera that I got from the 99p store. (You can see what they look like in the photo of my camera collection in this post) I love, love, love the grain in the cut trees photos. It's not very professional but I just really like film grain! And the end of roll burn in the first photo livens up what would be an otherwise dark and wasted photo of the forest. Disappointingly I only got about 8 photos back from this whole camera (of 24 exposures) so don't quite know what happened there :S

Anyone who reads my regular blog will know that my dad bought me a Praktica L2 for my birthday, and I got my first roll of film back today! (FYI, UK people, don't get your film developed at Jessops. They're so much more expensive than anywhere else and I only got half a film set back from one of my disposables :( ) Anyways, the Praktica works! Really good quality photos as well. A couple were out of focus (I like how you can focus this camera, although clearly I need more practice at this) and some were overexposed (again something you can fiddle with yourself) so a few more tries and I should be getting some great results from this camera!

I chose this particular photo to upload (I like to upload 5 a day and I already had 4 disposables) because of the light leak on the left, I think it adds a lovely finish to the photo :)

They're all film photographs. Adele intentionally caused destruction on them - drunk on wine at 4am (not a situation you'd usually would mix well for photography but Adele clearly made it work!) she threw salt and sugar and vinegar and bleach and oven baked instax pictures, then held flames to c-type prints, cooked them and drowned them in bleach and water.

She says; "the results are expressions of frustration, anger towards things which felt out of human control and subsequently an act of rebellion - turning traditional techniques inside out in attempt to reassure myself that I too could revert back to the way things should be."

These final three have been selected from Adele's flickr, they might not have been manipulated but they're still absolutely beautiful.

Well, what if you’d never seen your photos, because you weren’t the one who took them? The Camera From Athens is a disposable camera that contains 27 undeveloped photos from Greece, each shot by an up-and-coming artist. The 27 Kodak Moments Flickr group is now up and running! The 'Get Featured' button on the right of the screen (above featured photographers) is a click through link to the group, and the group links back here.

We're hoping it'll be easier for people to submit this way. We've put a limit of 4 photos a day on, just in case, and we've set it so they have to be approved before being submitted. We've not done this to exclude anyone's photographs, it's more so we know when new images have been submitted and it'll be easier to go through them to sort out the features.

We're (well Hannah is) in the process of inviting everyone we've featured here to the group, as well as the photos used in their features. Within 10 minutes we had 4 members so we're hoping this'll grow quickly! Then we'll definitely have to find a new way of displaying the featured photographers like we mentioned in an earlier post!

Another photographer with a wonderful Flickr photostream; Scott Hunter (scott.hunter). Scott uses disposable cameras for most of his photos, so we're definitely a fan! The final two photos are expired polaroids, and we love the colours and effect.

Scott's full artist statement can be found on his Flickr profile, but he talks of drawing inspiration from his youth, focusing on his time spent as a graffiti writer and stencil artist, as well as from traveling to such places as Japan and Germany. Scott's work reproduces familiar visual signs, arranging them into new conceptually layered pieces. The materials he uses are determined by the subject matter, and subsequent bodies of work lead on from research and production.

A Little Update

Hi all :)

We've got some, we think exciting, ideas in the pipeline. Firstly we're planning to create a '27 Kodak Moments' group on Flickr. Most successful photo blogs have corresponding flickr groups, to allow people to submit to the group for a feature on the blog and things like that. We're still a newish blog so we're not too picky about who we feature; at the moment we're approaching photographers asking to feature their work, to build a following and get some exposure, but we're hoping in the future more people will approach us. So we're hoping the flickr group will allow us to do this. Good idea? We don't actually know if the '27 Kodak Moments' name is already taken on flickr, but let's hope not!

Secondly, it's just been our main contributor Hannah's birthday (happy birthday!) and she got a few new (and old) cameras and has also bought a few for herself so we're hoping to do some more camera reviews in the future!

Also we hope you're enjoying the new layout, especially the featured photographers list on the right hand side, complete with thumbnail link to their feature. That'll constantly be updated as we feature more photographers, although we may have to change it again in the future as it already takes up rather a lot of space! Any blog experts have any ideas for us?

So that's about all for now. We'd love to hear from you!

Helen Ritchey (CLARITY; on Flickr) has a really stunning photostream. Definitely worth a closer look.

Helen's methods include soaking a film in vinegar for five minutes (pre-processing), boiling an expired film with baking soda and even modifying a camera with a homemade pinhole. Great techniques.

The final two photos are experiments with only winding the film on half way between exposures. They're from a homemade pinhole from a modified camera, 35mm Film, 200iso.

Luca Vincenzo

The very talented Luca Vicenzo (check out his website here) got in contact with us via the email address listed somewhere on this page (kodakmoments_27@live.co.uk in case you were wondering, or also hannahcurson@hotmail.co.uk for chief contributor Hannah, who is more likely to check her emails!) to make us aware of his photography, and we're so glad he did. We LOVE his work! The colours and lighting are so wonderful, and the grain on the film photos adds such a wonderful touch.

Luca has used several cameras for these shots, including disposables, an Olympus Trip 35 and a Pentax K1000. You'll have to take a look at his website to find out which camera fits with each photo! They're also all completely unedited, which we always like to see.

We find most of our photographers on Flickr and ask for their permission to do a feature on them, but we'd love if more of you approached us (email us or comment on a post) so we can be made aware of who out there likes to experiment with photography. So get in touch! We may still be only a small blog but we are growing!

Just been hearing reports that Kodak could soon be filing for bankruptcy (it was actually while I was in Poundland stocking up on £1 Kodak ColorPlus film that the guy in the queue next to me was telling me about them declaring bankruptcy). Bit of a shock really, they're like the biggest name in photography!

We mentioned the book Buried by Stephen Gill in yesterday's post, and we were so intrigued by the subject of the book we thought we'd give it its own post.

Publisher's Description

'The photographs in this book were taken in Hackney Wick and later buried there. The amount of time the images were left undergournd varied depending on the amount of rainfall. The depths that pictures were buried at also varied, as did their positioning. Sometimes they were facing each other, sometimes back to back or sometimes buried singly.

'Not knowing what an image would look like once it was dug up introduced an element of chance and surprise that I found appealing. This feeling of letting go and collaborating with place - allowing it also to work on putting the finishing touches to a picture - felt fair. Maybe the spirit of the place can also make its mark.'

Buried is housed in a paper slipcase, and each copy of the book includes an original c-type photograph in an envelope marked 'Bury Your Own.'

Unfortunately it is very expensive to buy, but it could be fun to try this out for yourself!

Toilet Paper is hardly an auspicious name for a photography magazine. Reflecting on the title of this new commercial and advertising magazine and the reasons why an editor would choose to imbue their publication with such clear derogatory connotations, I remembered what Eileen, a keen contributor to this blog, said to me at the Brighton Photo Biennial: “there is so much ‘disposable photography’ around…”

‘Disposable photography’. Eileen’s remark has been stuck in my mind from the minute I heard it. In fact, it has become a curse too because now I see trivial, self-indulgent images taken by self-absorbed citizen-photographers absolutely everywhere. The image-upload statistics on the internet, symptomatic of this malaise, are mind-boggling:

There are nearly 5,000 new images uploaded to Flickr every minute
Every 60 seconds there are 35 new hours of video uploaded on YouTube
Facebook is growing at a rate of 60 million new images per week – that’s nearly 6,000 per minute

The great majority of those images are disposable photographs which say more about the person who took them than anything else. To me, they are best described as snippets of triviality. This is what I struggle with as a humanist documentary photographer. For me photography is not about the person who took the image but about the world, that is, about stories that take us along new paths of understanding. The counter-argument is that photographs also function as visual mnemonic devices that encapsulate personal life experiences of those who took them. As such, they are also a document, albeit a private one.

Take, for example, Vice, a free lavishly illustrated print & online magazine about the on implausible topics, some of which are undoubtedly controversial – just have a look at the features listed on the home page. The printed version of the magazine, slightly less outrageous than the online one, is packed with photography which seems to have been sourced out of social networking websites. After much deliberation I’ve come to the conclusion that those immediate, unsophisticated, true-to-the-moment photographs that I see in Vice are perhaps a new kind of documentary photography which may well do away with the documentary photographer sooner than we think.

Disposable images are also slightly surreal, showing a lived experience – that of the person who took the photograph – but devoid of any contextual information to make sense of it. All that one can do is speculate about whatever was in the mind of whoever took the photograph. Pure surrealism then, trying to figure out the workings of the unconscious… Is this why there is a marked surrealist trend in contemporary documentary I wonder? You only have to look at the the dark, sinister photographs by Anders Petersen and Jacob Aue Sobol or the colour worlds featured in Dayfour magazine to notice that surrealist undercurrent. Is this the way we are being trained to see?

Perhaps the best thing to do with disposable photographs is what Stephen Gill did with his polaroids: bury them. Well, not quite; he then dug them up and made a book with them – Buried. See what I mean? These days you can even make a book with images you have disposed of.

Recyclable Camera Photography

Continuing our exploration of the world of toy and economy photography (see previous polaroid page), I was delighted to have the opportunity to do what all the adverts told me and get a recyclable camera for New Years Eve 1999. Recyclable cameras - otherwise known as 'disposable' or 'single-use' or 'one-time-use' cameras - are those ones you buy with a film built-in, and when you've taken the photos you hand the whole unit to your photo processor, who develops your pics and returns the camera to its maker for recycling (hopefully).

I remember when they first came out, in 1989 probably, and they reviewed one in Smash Hits. The photos were really foggy and rubbish, and the artistic potential didn't really strike me at the time.

For my Millennium Eve try-out, at Cream 2000 (big dance event in Liverpool), I really wanted to get the cheapest one possible, which was five pounds (eight US dollars) in Woolworths, but for some reason I didn't (I think I believed that it simply couldn't work at all if it was that cheap), so unfortunately I ended up getting a relatively-swanky Kodak one -- as pictured above -- for ten pounds at a petrol station, six hours before that much-hyped midnight. So here are four of the pictures, worst one first.

This is Orbital at five seconds to midnight. You can see some big number fives if you look, er, closely. But obviously it is a crap photo and this is exactly what you expect a photo from a ten pound camera to look like. (As with all these, in fact, I've digitally tweaked it and the original was worse than this).

This is another of the rubbish kind of photo you expect to get out of a throwaway camera. It's a self-portrait probably. And it's earlier. You don't get trees at Cream obviously.

But look at this glorious image of Liverpool's finest chip chefs. I thought this was quite good really. A £200 camera would take the same photo under these circumstances.

And look at this fine portrait photography. Well-known club promoter Charles Cheung looks pleased with his event.

5 Days of Christmas.

Here is the first of my Flickr christmas uploads. I'm calling it the 5 days of christmas. I have enough photos to do the 12 days of christmas after the big day itself, but these photos are all about the build up to the day so they need to go before really! So it's 5 photos a day, for 5 days, right up until christmas eve :) enjoy!

Oh and this is also the first film back from my Fuuvi Juicebox Camera. The funny way the lens works means got my fingers in the way of a few, but overall I love it!

(anyone catch the Sea Wolf song there?!)

These were all taken the last time I went to London, mainly the windows of Selfridges :)

Between July 1997-February 1998, 40 disposable cameras were given to homeless people in Budapest. Each participant was asked to take photographs of whatever they felt to be important or interesting in their everyday experience, in the knowledge that their pictures would later be viewed publicly as part of an exhibition and web site. The participants were approached on a fairly random basis in the city's metro stations and homeless shelters. When the prints were ready we recorded an interview with each photographer about their pictures. Through the support of our sponsors we were able to recompense the participants for their work.

There's pretty much going to be five photos posting a day to try and clear some of the backlog of photos I have on my laptop (120 queued at the moment!) plus I took five films in to be developed yesterday, and still have at least three more ready to go, so I need to get some posted now. The majority of the ones on the films being developed atm are wintery/from christmas shops so I'll leave them to the week leading up until christmas :) Enjoy!

As I previously posted, my attempts at slamming the camera failed miserably, but Julia has achieved a wonderful result (photo 2) she's also managed to get a great double exposure (final photo) and I think the two flower photos are simply beautiful :)

Julia says she doesn't consider herself a photographer in any way (her blog is mostly fashion) but she clearly has natural talent for achieving something creative with a disposable camera!

Taking Pictures With a Disposable Camera, by Phil Pivnick

People use disposable cameras all the time because they're cheap, easy and convenient. Still, some of the most common mistakes in photography happen because people don’t quite understand a few basic things about their disposable camera.

The biggest mistake by far is assuming that all disposable cameras are the same. This couldn’t be farther from the truth; yet time and again a customer will choose the less expensive camera thinking there’s no difference but price. I promise that there really are good and bad quality disposables.

First there is a difference between the film each disposable uses. Less expensive cameras often contain lesser quality films. This can result in very bland colors or worse. Don’t forget that even trusted brands like Kodak offer low and high end films. It is also important to make sure that the film in the camera is a good ISO. Since the lenses on disposable cameras are never what the professionals describe as “fast,” a high speed film is essential. If it will be used in the bright outdoors then a 200iso or 400iso is okay, but otherwise stick with the 800iso film. A lot of customers shy away from that option because 800iso is known for being grainy; even if that is the case it’s also a sacrifice worth making for clarity.

Almost all disposable cameras have a flash. Use it. Give yourself time before taking a picture to push the flash button to charge the flash. Make sure you don’t take the picture until the “flash ready” light is lit. When taking close-up shots of people it is almost always safer to use the flash than not. Trusting the available light is not only risky, but they type of film used in the camera assumes you will use the flash.

The exception to this rule is when the subject is just too far away. Remember that the flash can only light up subject within 10 feet or so. Notice the flashes that always go off from the stands at a sports game? Using the flash at those times will likely hurt your photograph. There is no way it will illuminate your subject, but it may bounce back from the guy in front of you.

The other distance to keep in mind is 3 feet. If you are taking a picture of something closer than that it will more than likely be out of focus. This isn’t a flaw, just an unfortunate fact of physics. Another reason for keeping the subject a bit farther away is that what you see through the viewfinder isn’t exactly what is seen by the lens. Again, physics. Once the subject is about 3 feet away then things are pretty much lined up. It’s still a good idea to leave room for mistakes at the top and bottom of the frame—just in case.

Once you’re okay with all of this then it’s as easy as grab a camera, point and shoot. Then, as long as you keep your finger away from the lens, you shouldn’t have a problem.

We've posted about Alicia Soltani (asoltani) before with her painted lens, and we regularly keep an eye on her flickr feed. So we were excited when she posted this photo, where she'd soaked the film in carrot juice. We think the effect frames the photo perfectly, and adds a lovely tint to the overall image.

Keelan Tollefson, u▽ןǝǝʞ on flickr, created this amazing set of photographs by boiling the film for 5 minutes pre-shooting, which is not often seen - usually the film is tampered with post shooting. We think that's why you can still clearly see what's going on in the photo; often tampered film looks amazing but doesn't actually look like a real picture of anything. Here you get a good photo, in addition to the wonderful colours which really add a lovely quality to the final image.

This is a wet experiment that Hannah is actually keen to try out, especially after her problems with the lemon juice film which has put her off slightly! So good luck to her, and keep up the good work Keelan!

A couple of my photographs are going to be featured in the second issue of Imagine That magazine! I previously had a feature on their website for my handmade graphic design work (see it here) and I was quoted in the first issue, so it's exciting to now have some of my photography work printed as well :)

Experiments with Disposable Cameras

● Double Exposure

I'd recently found and used up an old black&white disposable I found in a box not too long ago, and it reignited my interest in using something other than digital. So when my boyfriend and I were browsing through Gizmodo and saw the weekly contest about disposable cameras, we instantly wanted to get out of our comfort zone and try our hand at it. We bought a two pack of Fujifilm Quick Snap Flash 35mms and set out looking for ideas. I knew right off that I wanted to attempt multiple exposures. It took a few frames to finally figure it out but we got there eventually. After taking photos of random things (hoping they'd be layered), I decided I wanted more of a method to the chaos. I convinced my boyfriend to be my muse and shot different aspects of him (his hands, shoulders, arms, face, feet, and hair) against a muted backdrop so the color of his skin would be a meshed focal point. And I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

● Pinwheel

I used a DiFox color plus premium edition "happy click" with a 400ASA. When the bright yellow poorly fitted cardboard outside was peeled back, it revealed a disposable with Spanish printed on it, taped together with gaffer's tape at the corner. Deluxe!

My boyfriend came home with a two pack and the rules of this contest on Friday. I had a killer sinus infection, but there was a kick ass sunset in progress, so I ran around the terrace in my slippers, mostly taking photos of that. When I decided that I needed a little something extra in there, I popped this pinwheel flower that a guy I work with gave me when boyfriend and I got engaged two weeks ago. I think the soft focus in the foreground and the puffy white sunset clouds in the background make for something kind of magical. Most of my other shots were crap, but I really liked the whole "I have no idea what I just shot" aspect of shooting with this little box. I've kind of forgotten what that was like.

This shot was unplanned but worked out the best. It was taken through the windshield while riding in a friend's car. The blue-tinted strip of glass at the top provided a great faux cross-processed sky. Taken with Fujifilm disposable (400 speed film), developed at Costco while I impulse-bought bulk items I didn't need, and resized in Photoshop.

Expired Film.

You can get some great results by using expired film. These photos were all taken on my Olympus Trip 35, using a variety of films expired between 2009-10. If you can get your hands on older films you can get more distorted photos, but they're difficult to find for a reasonable price. I've bought all of mine from ebay.

Tokyo Dreamer Strap.

We want this strap! The Tokyo Dreamer Strap is Japanese and unfortunately (for us Brits at least) it only ships to the USA, but we still love the colour scheme and little pocket for a spare film :)

This National Geographic equivalent comes with 2 pockets, which is a bonus, especially for more lengthy shoots where you might need to carry spare batteries, or an extra memory card if you're shooting digital.

Zach Fudge

Zach says of his technique; "I shot the roll like normal, then I dropped the roll into pepsi and left it there for about 5 minutes. I took it out, washed it out with water and let it dry in the sun. Then I just took it to the labs like normal". (although the last one was in lemonade!)

As much as we love these, we don't think we'll be trying them just yet - Hannah's very reluctant to try anymore "wet experiments" just yet!

Lemon Juice Experiments

I got my film back today that I'd soaked in lemon juice. I think it's safe to say, it was a failure. I'd soaked the film, in it's canister, in lemon juice (from one of those lemon shaped bottles, I think it might have worked better in fresh lemon juice :S) for 3 hours (I meant to leave it for only 2 but I forgot about it) then rinsed it and put it in the airing cupboard for 3 days. The outer plastic had melted a little bit when I took it out so that can't have helped much either :s it then sat in room temperature for another day before I took it in to be developed.

Here's the annoying part - I also took in a disposable camera at the same time. I'd messed around with the lens and flash on this, but the film stayed completely dry. Or so I thought. I will admit to putting the camera and the film in a plastic bag together to carry them to the shop, but they weren't in there for long. Apparently it was long enough though, because from the 54 photos I should have got back, I only got 14 :( I also got a roll of negatives with nothing on them, so I don't know how the disposable messed up so much that nothing came out (unless the photos I did get back were from the disposable, which they may have been, I'm not entirely sure. Although now as I try to remember what was on each film it makes more sense for the ones that came back to have been from the disposable)

So here's what I did get back:

It just annoys me to think of the things I'd taken photos of that didn't come out; a trip to Cambridge, the most amazing christmas shop in Sudbury (too far to go back for) and the bridal flower section of a garden centre. I guess that's what you have to deal with when you experiment with film like this though! If I do try again at some point, I think I'll stick to generic shots!

My jelly lens came today :)

I bought the starburst one (although I bought it from this seller on ebay, so it's actually green)

I haven't really used it much yet but I'll tell you what I think so far. I'm not overly impressed. Yes it fits well on the back of my blackberry (although I not with a case on because it sticks a little too well), but the back cover doesn't stay attached very well so it's going to quickly lose it's stickiness. You can't use the zoom while it's attached.

I haven't really taken many photos yet so I don't know how well it performs, but the photo below is a quick example. It does blur the edge slightly in a quite nice effect, but it's not really very noticeable. I think I need to try it in better lighting, with something actually in the background so you can see the effect it has.

However, it was ridiculously cheap. So even though I can't actually attach it to my phone because I don't have the two little holes (I'm sure they have an actual name) that the lanyard loops through, it's kinda fun and because it's cheap you can play around with a few different ones. I like the way they all look together, so I might be persuaded to buy some more in the future!

[I'll update this when I've taken some proper photos!)

These stunning photos are by Fysal Amirzada (fysalamirzada on flickr).

Fysal describes his process:

“The film was soaked [in lemon juice] after exposure, given a few days to dry, then I hung it up in a blacked out room in my basement for about 12 hours, then just developed at wal-mart”

Fysal used a disposable camera to take the photos, and soaked the whole camera in the juice from real lemons.

We love the colours and tones of these photos, especially the hint of yellow light in the last one. Check out the full set here.

Hannah has a film ready to go so she will be trying this herself later on today, so after drying and developing time she should have something to show next week :) keep an eye out!

LOMO Action Sampler Review.

Ok so this is the Action Sampler camera I have:

I've had one film developed so far. I'm not sure about the results, I mean I like how they look but I don't think they really capture the "action".

It's very easy to use, it has a [pretty pathetic] "viewfinder" on top that you lift up (it's really just a square but of plastic, hollow in the middle!) It makes a very strange noise when you take the photo, sort of like a grinding, it's just very loud!

I love this one:

No action at all, but it's from the end of the film, hence the lovely light leak.

You can just about see the fish move in this, they were moving pretty slowly at the time.

You can see some movement in the seals.

A slight issue I've found with this camera; several of the photos from this film have finger marks in the way. The odd thing is that it's not in all 4 pictures, and it's not in the last one, where you would expect it, it's usually in the first and third sections. This strikes me as a bit odd, I mean how did I manage to get my finger in the way for those sections but not the others!? The photo takes really fast so it's not like it's because of the time it's taking the photo. Very weird.

I guess you have to be shooting something that's moving really fast for this camera to shoot properly. It may just be because I don't think this is a real Lomography camera, I got it off ebay. So maybe stick to an proper version from Lomography or Amazon.
