Dakota Rose Wood

Dakota Rose Wood has some truly stunning shots in her set Destroyed Film on Flickr. Her techniques include lemon juice, boiling water, salt water, habanero sauce, bleach and vinegar.

This set was sprayed with bleach, soaked in pink champagne and tapped with a fork:

Head on over to her Flickr to view the full set :)

  1. Hey, this may be a really stupid question, but do you take the film out of the camera before you soak it, or can you just soak the whole camera and it will soak through?

  2. Hi Julia, not stupid at all, we constantly wonder the same thing!

I think it varies per photographer. Some who soak disposable film will put the whole camera in, whereas if it's a film from a real camera, one that can be used again, is most likely vintage so definitely don't want to destroy it (!) the film will be shot then once complete will be soaked before development. We're not sure on the process of the photos above that are just of the negatives, but we think it's the same technique used (soaking the film once shot) then once developed these are just photos of how the negatives look.

    Hope that helped!

  3. Yes it did! One more question that google wasn't able to help me with- if you soak a disposable (the whole thing), is there some kind of drying process that needs to take place? Will it dry out on its own (if so, how long would that take?)? Because something tells me a developer won't want to develop a disposable that's clearly been soaked in something.

  4. From what I've read, it takes a few days to dry out. I know when our contributor Hannah did it though she had some problems with developing, she soaked her film in lemon juice and the film was still oily 4 days later so they couldn't process it. I don't know what would happen if you rinsed the film after soaking it, I don't know if that would make it too wet or anything :S

Trial and error I guess?! Do you have flickr? The photographers we've featured on here are all on flickr so you could try asking them? But you've raised an interesting point that would definitely benefit Hannah to find the answer to (she's reluctant to try another 'wet' experiment because she doesn't want to ruin another photo!) so we'll do our best to find out what other photographers have done and get back to you!

    Thanks Julia.
